Quotes, paraphrase, and citation #4

"The commercial use of the internet by American adults has grown since the mid-2000s, with 58% of Americans now reporting that they perform online research concerning the products and services that they are considering purchasing. That is an increase from 49% who said they conducted product or service research online in 2004.

Morever, the number of those who do research about products on any given day has jumped from 15% of adults in September 2007 to 21% in September 2010. From February 2004, the number of adults conducting research on any given day has more than doubled, up from 9%.

Additionally, 24% of American adults say they have posted comments or reviews online about the product or services they buy, indicating a willingness to share their opinions about products and the buying experience with others.“Many Americans begin their purchasing experience by doing online research to compare prices, quality, and the reviews of other shoppers,” said Jim Jansen, Senior Fellow at the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project and author of a new report about online product research. “Even if they end up making their purchase in a store, they start their fact-finding and decision-making on the internet.” "

This quote talks about a few things. The first thing that it talks about is how people are now using the internet to make educated decisions on what items they purchase. They do this by reading reviews on that item and asking other internet users on their opinion on that item. Another thing that the author talks about is how people now compare prices from one store with other stores to try and get the best price. Imagine trying to do this without the internet. You would have to find the phone number for each store and call to see the price or drive to that store to ask. The internet saves a lot of time and money because everything is right there. The author of this article is Jim Jansen. The author uses research as a type of prapoganda in order to draw us in and believe the content that he has written.

Chart on my topic

This graph shows how people use the internet whenever they get on. It supports my topic because it shows how the internet is affecting people by allowing them to gather up all this information that they would have to do more labor without. It shows the total internet usage then goes into detail on what the people do when they are on the internet.

Quote, Summary, source analysis, and citation

"There is no doubt the Internet is a wondrous creation. The entire world is rapidly becoming obsessed with it. Everywhere you look you're bound to see something related to the Internet. Click on the icon at left to see an Internet growth summary.
There is little doubt about how useful the Internet can be. Schoolchildren can receive help with homework, investors can keep track of stocks, sports scores and statistics are just a click away for fans. These are but a few of the myriad ways people use the Internet.
When television exploded onto the scene in the 1940-50s, it provided much the same things the Internet is providing people today: entertainment and information. However, the Internet has certain advantages over television and, most importantly, it provides instant access to specific information. It is interactive, whereas television is not. Avid proponents of the Internet claim it could feasibly replace print media. The cost of publishing a newspaper or magazine online is far less than the cost of printing one. There is no need to purchase bulk paper and ink, which in itself makes publishing on the Internet more attractive. Moreover, not as many hired hands are required to publish online."
In this article it talks about how the internet has affected our society. It gives really good examples like the one about the tv and how it exploded in popularity. T.v gave people a source of entertainment, news, and information. It also shows how the internet can make things more cost effective. For example, when we print newspapers we use ink and paper plus manpower to get all those thousands of papers ready everyday. With the internet all you need is 1 person and that person can make a webpage that shows all that information in a fraction of the time. The increase in speed of the information helps us know of any important news like a natural disaster or huge event. The author of this article is Rob Purdy. The type of prapoganda that the author used is research because he listed many sources with their hyperlinks. Overall I think that this article greatly helps my blog because it compares the internet of today to the t.v of the 1940's and 50's.

This picture shows how diverse the internet can be to all age groups. When we think of internet usage we usually think of young people. But, as you can see here the elderly can also enjoy the benefits of the internet. By the look of their smiles I can tell they really do enjoy it.

Quote, Summary, source analysis, and citation

"54% of adults used the internet for political purposes in the last cycle, far surpassing the 2006 midterm contest. They hold mixed views about the impact of the internet: It enables extremism, while helping the like-minded find each other. It provides diverse sources, but makes it harder to find truthful sources.

Fully 73% of adult internet users (representing 54% of all US adults) went online to get news or information about the 2010 midterm elections, or to get involved in the campaign in one way or another. We refer to these individuals as “online political users” and our definition includes anyone who did at least one of the following activities in 2010"

In this survey it shows how people use the internet to look up political information. It says that since 2006, there has been a huge growth in internet usage in finding political information. That information helps my topic because it shows how instead of reading the newspaper or watching the news on t.v people can now find exactly what they want to see on the internet. The survery also says that people that use the internet for things like political information may be misinformed because anybody can post anything they want on the internet. Because of this, using the internet may give you false information. The author wants uses a type of prapoganda that makes people more interested in this article and to hopefully believe it. That prapoganda technique is the use of statistics. Since it is a article there are a myriad of statictics throughout. I believe that that technique has worked very well because I find this surver and articel very convincing and believable becasue it has statistics.

In this Picture a woman is in the comfort of her own home while talking on the phone and buying items on the internet. This shows the power of the internet and how it affects daily life. With the internet you can talk to a friend, look up any information, and buy items simultaneously while not even leaving your bed when you wake up.

Quote, summary, source analysis, and citation

Quote:  "The vast majority of online Americans hold a high opinion of the Internet as a place to conduct the everyday tasks and pursue the everyday pleasures of life, such as checking the weather, doing their banking, communicating with friends and family, and playing games. Over the course of the four years in which the Pew Internet Project has been tracking online activities, a growing number of users have acted on their positive opinions of the Internet and gone online to do these things.
􀂄 92% of Internet users say the Internet is a good place to go for getting everyday information.
􀂄 85% say the Internet is a good way to communicate or interact with others.
􀂄 75% say the Internet is a good place to conduct everyday transactions.
􀂄 69% say the Internet is a good way to entertain themselves in everyday life."

Paraphrase:  This article provides the exact information that my topic is about. As you can see in this quote that I added above, many people use the internet for daily routines that other people had to do more labor to find out before we had the internet. People use it to check the weather, play games, online banking, and finding news.

Summary: The article that I chose supports my topic 100%. It provides many statistics that prove how people are using the internet more and for daily things. One of the best pieces of information that it has is the statistics that are at the beginning of this post. It says that "92% of users say the internet is a good place to go for getting everyday information." This really supports my topic. The type of propaganda that the author uses to get readers to believe his information is the usage of statistics. Without these statistics I don't think that this article would be as convincing as it is.

A woman on the internet while eating
In this picture a young woman is sitting in her home on the internet while eating pizza. This relates to my topic because it shows how the internet can be multi-tasked with other everyday activities. We can assume that she is looking at some news site that displays an infinite amount of information. If she didn't have the luxury of the internet she would have to do a lot more work to find out the same amount of information.

What I want to know about this topic

This topic has a wide range of possible questions that I would like to challenge myself to find but I am only going to choose five base questions and one overall general question. The overall general question is"How has the Internet affected our daily life?" I chose this question because it is what I want to find out and it is the basis for my whole investigation. The five sub-questions that I chose are  "How do we find information like weather and news now that the Internet is around?,Has the Internet brought humans to being more lazy than times when the Internet was not around?, If the internet goes away in the future, will we be able to live normal, healthy lives?, What about the Internet makes people so willing to use it for everything?, Will the internet come back to bite us one day?" I chose these five questions because I felt that they would provide very interesting information for us all to learn; while being easily understood and debated.

What I already know about this topic

Internet in the Morning
The internet is a relatively new invention and even newer if you count the time it took to make it practical to use. It has had a tremendous impact on everybody around the world; therefore, it is something that mostly everybody uses on a daily basis. It allows you to be connected to everybody in the world and gives you resources to find any type of information and to do anything that you want. I know that It has changed the way people live their daily lives too. When people wake up in today's time all they have to do is simply reach over to their bedside and get their phone or laptop and tap the NEWS app or face book app and they are instantly able to read about whatever they want, as much as they want.Back when you had to rely on news papers to find the news you had to get up and go retrieve you paper yourself or hope that somebody loves you and they will go and get it for you along with your breakfast in bed. I also know that the Internet makes it easier for people to stay entertained. With the Internet you don't even need a T.V to watch live streaming television or watch movies. You just go to a website like netflix and press "click here to watch". Basically, the Internet makes anything and everything way more easier and more enjoyable to get. I have gained this knowledge by experiencing this in-person.

The story behind why I chose this topic

The Internet Drags us in
How many people remember days where you wake up on a Sunday morning and you must get out of bed and walk to your front step to get the newspaper in order for you to know the news? A lot of people probably remember that because it was only a few years ago. In today's time we don't need to get out of bed in order for you to find out what is new in the news. All we have to do is either grab our laptop and look up the news in bed or even look at our smart phones. The reason why I chose my topic is because I wanted to let other people know of how much a great technology the Internet is and how is dramatically changed our daily routine in such a short amount of time; as a result, people have taken the Internet for granted. I believe that people have grown so accustomed to not having to put forth hardly any effort at all in order to perform tasks that a few years back would be a totally different ballgame. It is important to know how the Internet has affected us and our daily routine.
