Wordle #2

Wordle: Untitled

This wordle has 25 of the most important words that I used to find my research. The single most important word is "internet" because that what my whole project is about. I chose the color pattern because it matches my background. The blue in the words and on my background represent electricity to me and thats what internet needs to work. The random word pattern is because whe you look at HTML writing it looks like a bunch of random letters and symbols.

Sources reflection

When I was researching information for my Blog I found it very easy to get good information and statistics. I think that is becasue other people see how important the internet is to daily life and they do studys to see exactly how we are affected by it. The best source that I could find was the pew internet website. That whole website is just one big survey and research project that shows exactly what the internet does for people in over time. It basically shows you everything you would ever want to know about the internet effects. The website that had the most bias was the iml.jou.ufl.edu website. It just talked about how good the internet was without giving any bad or negative things. Overall I didn't have any trouble finding information and it was easy answering my questions.

Reflection Paragraph

This Blog project was really fun for me. At first I didn't think that I would enjoy it but once I saw what I would be doing my mind quickly changed. The most important facts that I learned from this project is that the internet has come a long way. Since the early 1990's there was less than a half million people online. Now there are millions and millions of people on every day. That makes me think that the internet is a positive thing to people in their everyday lives. The thing that I found most surprising was how the older people were not using the internet as much as I thought they would. If I had the opportunity to do the project again and could do things differently I would try to make my page look better and try to have videos on it. Overall I had a really good time working on this Blog project.

FInding paragraph #3

My essential question for this last finding paragraph is "Why do we see the internet as such a usefull resource?"

"There is little doubt about how useful the Internet can be. Schoolchildren can receive help with homework, investors can keep track of stocks, sports scores and statistics are just a click away for fans. These are but a few of the myriad ways people use the Internet....Avid proponents of the Internet claim it could feasibly replace print media. The cost of publishing a newspaper or magazine online is far less than the cost of printing one. There is no need to purchase bulk paper and ink, which in itself makes publishing on the Internet more attractive. Moreover, not as many hired hands are required to publish online."

This quotation connects to my essential question because it explains how helpful the internet can be to everyday people. Some of the different uses are in this snippit of the quote "Schoolchildren can receive help with homework, investors can keep track of stocks, sports scores and statistics are just a click away for fans."(Purdy) All of these activities show how usefull the internet is and how it affects us everyday. I think the best example out of all those is how schoolchildren can get help with homework and projects.

"The Internet's number one feature is email. The number of users logging on continues to skyrocket. Most do so for email capability. It allows one to stay in touch inexpensively with family, friends and acquaintances next door, in the next town, in the next state, in the next country and so on. Email is faster and cheaper than "snail mail" (regular Post Office mail)"

This quote connects with my essential question because it tells one of the internets greatest parts. The greatest thing is the email. As it says in the quote, email saves us money because we dont have to pay for paper and the mail men to ship the mail to each house. Now we just have to simply type up a message, add our contacts, and then hit the send button. Within seconds those contacts will recieve the message. No more waiting days to get the letter and no more paying for stamps.

". Yet while the act formally known as blogging seems to have peaked, internet users are doing blog-like things in other online spaces as they post updates about their lives, musings about the world, jokes, and links on social networking sites and micro-blogging sites such as Twitter."

This last quote connects to my essential question because it talks about how people can do things that will entertain them. When we use the internet for entertainment we are usually doing it because we are stressed or we just need to get our minds off the real world. With the internet we can look up jokes and play games, listen to music and watch videos, and blogg about our daily life.
All of these three quotes all connect together to what I found while researching this topic. I found that the internet does in fact keep us entertained and we see it as a really usefull tool.

FInding paragraph #2

My essential question for this paragraph is "In what ways does the internet help people with their everyday activities?"

"According to our May 2010 survey, 78% of American adult internet users use the internet on an average day. Here are some of the things they do on a typical day. Use the internet-78%, send or read email-62%, use search engine to find information-49%, get news-43%, just for fun-38%, social networking-38%, check the weather-34%."
This quote connects with my essential question because it tells us exactly what it is that the internet helps with. The quote contains types of activities with a percentage of people that use the internet for that specific activity. The biggest percentage was general internet usage of all people with 78% and the biggest specific activity was to send or view emails at 62%(pew-internet). The quote proves that the internet is being used in a myriad of ways.

"45% of Internet users who ever get the news get it both online and offline. Of that group, 22% access news more often online; 71% get news more often offline from places like newspapers, radio and TV. 27% of Internet users who ever purchase tickets do so both online and offline. Of those 38% buy tickets more often online; 57% buy them more often by phone, mail, or in person 26% of Internet users who ever do banking or pay bills do so both online and offline. Of those, 34% do it more often online; 54% do it more often in offline.

This quote connects with my essential question because it lists three of the most internet uses and they give a percentage of how many people do that activity online vs offline. Since this quote is a few years old, its interesting to see how things have changed since then. Now the internet has a higher percentage in each activity. That shows that the internet use is increasing.

"Some 40% of Internet users who get the news online say they log on daily, and a total of 70% do that at least several times a week. Some 25% of the online weather bugs will check weather daily, and 55% in all will check weather at least several times a week. Some 20% of online sports fans check sports scores daily, and 61% at least several times a week."

This last quote connects with my essential question because it talks about how much of the internet users go on the internet everyday. According to the quote, a total of 70% of internet users log on daily several times a week. That is a huge number of people that go on the internet every single day of the week. All of these quotes relate and help prove my point that people are using the internet and that the internet is changing the way people live their everyday lives.

FInding paragraph #1

My essential question for this paragraph "Who has the internet affected the most generation wise?"

"Milliennials, those ages 18-33, remain more likely to access the internet wirelessly with a or mobile phone. In addition, they still surpass their elders online when it comes to many communication- and entertainment-related activities, such as using social network sites and playing games online."

The connection that this quote has to the essential question would be that it talks about a certain age group with the effects of how the internet has affected that specific age group. Internet has effected the milliennials most(ages 18-33). In addition, they still clearly surpass their elders online when it comes to many communication(Zickuhr). Senior people don't use internet for activities like communication as much as the younger generation does. Senior people use internet mainly for activities like checking news, weather, and things of that nature.

"Social networking use among internet users ages 50 and older nearly doubled--from 22% in April 2009 to 42% in May 2010"

According to an article by Mary Madden communication use of old people is growing. Even though older people don't use internet for communication as much, that's changing very fast. This quote connects with my essential question because it shows that older people are also using internet at a rising pace for communication just like younger people are. Senior people are becoming more and more familiar with internet and they are seeing benefits of it. Because of this, internet is affecting not only younger generations but older ones as well.

"Fully 73% of adult internet users (representing 54% of all US adults) went online to get news or information about the 2010 midterm elections, or to get involved in the campaign in one way or another."

My final quote says that a whole 73% of adult internet users got news about the 2010 election with the help of the internet. That's a huge number of people that is depending on the internet to supply them with accurate information at their fingertips. This connects with my essential question because it mentions how 54% of all US adults went online to find information. It shows that the internet is in fact affecting the adult population.

Quotes, paraphrase, and citation #5

"Advanced technology always has dramatic effects on society. With the ability to work at home, a lot of people are leaving their offices for the greener grass that allows them to set their own hours, spend quality time with family and not have to deal with the often hasslesome commute to and from work. "

This quote talks about how the internet has a very big effect on society. As I stated before, the internet allows us to to tasks from the comfort of our own home while just 30 years earlier we would have to leave our house to do it. This comfort is causeing people to spend more time with their children, relax in thier own home instead of being in a stressful enviroment, and being able to work at home. The internet isnt a bad thing when it makes things simpler for us to do, but I do believe that we shouldnt totally depend on the internet and not ever leave our house again. The author of this article is Rob Purdy. This author uses little propagand in this quote. The only piece that I could find was glittering generalities. I think its that because he didnt say anything bad about the internet causing people to stay home more. He just talked about the positive things about it.
